GMO created foods may be used as a biological weapon

Genetically modified organisms (GMO) which are used to create new food seeds and crops, are being tied to use as a potential biological weapon in creating infertility in places around the world.

Besides the creation and use of GMO corn and other staples in places like South America, Mexico, and Africa, an interesting data point was discovered in the US shortly after GMO foods (BT-Corn) were approved in 1996. Since that time, birth rates in the US have been falling, and accelerating in decline since 1999, just three years after the introduction of the GMO to the food supply.

Since that time, birth rates in the US have been falling, and accelerating in decline since 1999, just three years after the introduction of the GMO to the food supply.

Since GMO food is not considered a natural commodity for consumption by the UN's regulatory body (Codex), and scientists have purposefully introduced spermacidal modifications into corn for the purpose of controlling world populations, then unequivocally, one of the many purposes of GMO created foods is for the use as a biological weapon.

Many global foundations have been pushing for the expansion of GMO foods, especially corn, soybeans, and rice to help end hunger and poverty around the world, and primarily in third world countries. The Gates Foundation, the Rockfeller Foundation, and former UN Chief Kofi Annan's Agra organization are just three powerful entities supplying funds and promotions to expand GMO use in many countries.

There is also an ongoing battle between citizens and the FDA to demand labelling of GMO based food products, but to this point, the government agency has been able to keep the public in the dark on what is in their food. Since GMO based products are not considered food under UN regulations, many questions still remain as to the reasons why the FDA allows them in consumable foods at all.

Creating a food source or seed meant to be eaten by man as a dietary staple which has been modified to bring sterility or outright birth control is in essence, creating and distributing a biological weapon for the sole purpose of lowering birth rates and populations in one or more locations. Since GMO based products are not considered food according to the UN Codex, but are being allowed into the world's diet as a consumable, creates many questions as to the real purpose of expanding GMO use into the food supply.

GM soy: The invisible ingredient 'poisoning' children

“Soy destroys people’s lives,” she says. “It is a poison. It is no way to live. Soy is deadly to us”.
“大豆摧毀人們的生活,”她說。 “它是毒藥,沒有辦法生活,大豆對我們是致命的。“
Sitting outside her painted green shack in rural Paraguay, the mother of eight describes the day in January 2003 when her 11-year-old son Silvino Talavera came home from cycling to the shops.
“I was washing clothes down by the river and he came to tell me he had been sprayed by one of the mosquitoes (the spraying machines behind a tractor),” she says.
“我在下面河邊洗衣服和他來告訴我,他已被其中一個蚊子(在拖拉機後的噴射機)噴中,”她說。
“He smelt so bad that he took his clothes off and jumped straight in the water.”
“他嗅到如此差的氣味,所以他除去他的衣服,及一口氣直跳下水。”
The busy mum did not think much more about it. For people living around GM soy fields spraying with chemicals is a common occurrence.
But later that day the whole family was ill after eating the food Silvino had brought from the shops.
Petrona rushed her youngest to hospital and by the time she was back the usually healthy child was in bed rigid with pain.
Now in a blind panic, she begged local farmers to take her to hospital.
“He was violently sick, he said mummy, my bones ache, his skin went black,” she says.
“他大力地不適,他說媽媽,我的骨頭疼痛,他的皮膚都變黑,”她說。
By the time they arrived in the city Silvino was paralysed, all the doctors could do was administer pain killers, while his mother wiped the foam from his mouth. In a few hours he was dead.
To the family it was clear this horrific death was caused by chemical intoxication but in their grief no autopsy was ever carried out. It was only after years of campaigning that Petrona managed to get the case to court. Eventually two local farmers were convicted of causing the death, though it is unclear whether they have ever been sent to prison.
Like many court cases in Paraguay there are serious unanswered questions. But Petrona is sure of one thing, that her son’s death was caused by GM soy and we should listen to her because we are eating it.
Daily Telegraph investigations have found that every single supermarket in Britain stocks meat and dairy from animals fed GM soy. Leading brands including Cadbury, Unilever and Dairycrest, also use products from livestock fed GM.
In fact the new technology is so widespread that it is likely at least one item of food you eat today will have come from an animal fed GM soy, whether it was the milk on your cereal or the bacon in your sandwich.

But what effect is our growing reliance on soy having on the countries supplying Britain with this ‘invisible ingredient’?
Paraguay, a landlocked country in the heart of South America, is on the front line of the new craze for growing ‘green gold’.

In many ways it is the perfect place to grow unsustainable soy. Ruled by despotic dictators for centuries, the country is famous for being a hot bed of drug smugglers, Nazi war criminals and even al-Qaeda. Even now, with a new democratically government in place, corruption is rife and regulations to protect the people are lax to say the least.

In the last year the amount of land planted with soy has grown to a record 2.6 million hectares, most of which is GM, leading to claims of deforestation, violent land disputes and the ‘poisoning’ of local communities.

Already it is estimated that 90 per cent of the Atlantic Rainforest in Paraguay has been lost to make way for crops, taking with it thousands of unique plants species, hundreds of rare birds and endangered animals like the jaguar.

There is evidence that soy production is now moving into the vast ‘Gran Chaco’ in the north of the country, the home of some of the last uncontracted tribes on Earth.

Its not just animals that suffer, the forests were also home to humans. Groups of Guarani people claim they have been driven from their land by the soy farmers. They can be seen camping in pathetic tarpaulin shacks in the town squares or on the road side. ‘Campesinos’, the small farmers who have traditionally worked the land, also claim they have been displaced. Since the first soy boom of 1990 it is estimated 100,000 farmers in Paraguay have been forced to migrate to urban slums. Like the ‘wild west’, as soy production moves into new areas there have been violent clashes between land owners and peasants occupying the land. Many of the ‘invaders’ are from Brazil or the even more alien Mennonites, a religious sect from Germany. Amnesty International say fights over land has led to several deaths, thousands of arrests and hundreds of injuries. It is now common to see armed guards protecting the soy fields 24 hours a day.

Those peasants who have clung to their land claim, like Petrona, that they are being “poisoned” by the ‘mosquitoes’. Most of the crop in Paraguay is GM and requires spraying with agrochemicals. Just as in the UK, farmers are expected to follow certain regulations when spraying fields such as leaving a space between homes or school playgrounds. ‘Live’ barriers of trees should be planted to protect communities and spraying is not allowed in strong winds or hot conditions.

However growing evidence of contamination, poisonings and even deaths suggest the rules are not being followed.

Farmers are also reported to be using compounds that are outlawed in Europe such as the 2,4-D or combinations of chemicals that could be dangerous.

Dr Stela Benitez, a paediatrician at Asuncion University, carried out a study in 2006 summarised in a respected American paediatrics journal, that found women living within 1km of sprayed fields were twice as likely to have a child with deformities.

She is quite certain that there is a risk and the regulations should be applied when spraying close to people’s homes, after all there are rules in Europe, so why not protect people in poorer countries?

“I am worried about a lack of control in an industry that does not apply the principle of protection over all our children,” she says.

The flouting of the law seems to be the main problem in a tour of Paraguay with Friends of the Earth to meet some of the victims of pesticides spraying.

The most recent case happened this January in the rolling hills of Colonia Yeruti, where a few families plant maize amid the growing fields of soy. Isabella Portillo, 26, describes how both her husband Reuben Caceras, 28, and her 2-year-old son Diego became sick after the fields were sprayed with a heavy dose of chemicals. The baby survived but she says her husband died of "intoxication" a few days later. “It is hard without him,” she says. “I feel completely alone.”

In Itakyru a whole community was affected when poisons “rained from the sky” and Guarani women and children were rushed to hospital. The chief says Giralda Gauto Vera, 18, and her daughter Giseli, 18 months, were in hospital for four days after the planes came. Later the authorities confirm that aerial spraying should not even be allowed in an area dotted with the dwellings of indigenous people.

Dr Angie Duarte, who has treated dozens of patients at the public hospital in Curuguaty for what she believes is “intoxication”, admits that many of the worse affected communities are already suffering from malnutrition, immune deficiency and perhaps even using dangerous chemicals themselves on crops.

But isn’t that all the more reason to ensure they are protected?

“How much is it costing to get this so wrong?” she asks. “I fear this will become a problem for the future because more people are getting sick and it impacts on health system. It is in everyone’s interests to act.”

Soy has certainly been in Paraguay’s economic interest over the last year, driving unprecedented growth of 14.5 per cent, ahead of even China.

Sweeping his hand across the shimmering fields, Breno Batista Bianchi is confident that it is soy farmers like him that the country has to thank.

Using new machinery and GM, he is reporting record yields while using less pesticides and water

Of course there are some problems with ‘super weeds’, that build up resistance to chemicals, and outbreaks of disease, but these can easily be solved.

“They will invent new seeds, new chemicals,” he says.

But this blind faith in progress is not shared by everyone.

Paraguay might be providing the soil, water and labour but a tiny percentage of the population see the profits. Soy is not even taxed and most of it leaves South America labelled as ‘Brazilian’ as shipments are mixed in together at the sea ports.

Oskar Rivas, the Environment Minister in a new socialist government, says the growth of soy must not be at the expense of the people.

“It is false development. Who foots the bill? The countryside, the people and the ecosystems and who keeps the profit? The corporations.”

Sr Rivas said it is up to the British consumer to demand change.

While he accepts it is too late to stop GM being grown in Paraguay, he insists more non-GM could be grown, just as in Brazil where whole states have insisted on a more sustainable system, or at least a more sustainable crop.

“You have the right to demand cheap milk and meat but you also have the right to demand milk and meat from environmentally sound sources,” he adds.

New initiatives such as the Round Table on Responsible Soy (RTSS), backed by WWF, hope to encourage this sort of production by producing a new label for soy, including GM soy, produced in a sustainable way. Already it has been taken up by major supermarkets in the UK including Waitrose, Asda, M&S and Sainsbury’s although many environmental groups are against a scheme that endorses GM.

Sitting in his new office complex, that is currently been dug up to make an organic garden, Sr Rivas sketches out his vision for a country that uses some of the best growing conditions in the world to produce healthy sustainable food.

Already Friends of the Earth International are working with local charity Sobrevivencia to teach communities environmental law so they can fight back when communities are sprayed and organic farming techniques so they can make their own food.

“At the moment we all lose out,” says the minister. “With a different structural process we could all win.”

German TV exposes the horrors of toxic GM soy
Thursday, February 17, 2011
by: Ethan A. Huff, staff writer
Translation by Autumnson Blog

(NaturalNews) Widespread environmental pollution; poisoning and contamination of agriculture; countless injuries, deformities, and deaths in humans -- these and many other horrific events are a result of cultivating genetically-modified (GM) crops, and GM soy in particular. A recent news documentary short that aired on German television exposes the massive destruction being caused by GM soy cultivation, and warns consumers that the food chain is more loaded with GM materials than they might think.
In Germany and throughout the European Union (EU), food products that contain GMOs must be properly labeled as such. As a result, there are few GM products on store shelves because, when made aware of their presence, consumers almost unanimously reject them. But what many people fail to realize, both in Europe and in the U.S., is that conventional livestock is often fed GM soy and corn, which ultimately ends up on store shelves in the form of conventional meat, milk, and eggs.
But the German documentary goes further, though, highlighting the other damage being cause by GM soy, including several cases of poisonings that have taken place in areas where GM soy is cultivated. Primarily in South America, where much of Europe's 41 million annual tons of soy come from, local residents are becoming poisoned, paralyzed, or killed by exposure to Monsanto's Roundup herbicide, also known as glyphosate, and the other chemical applications used to grow the GM crop.
"Before the poisoning we were a happy family," explains one young girl named Sofia who lives with her family near a GM soy field where heavy applications of Roundup take place. "We had our plants and fruit trees, but we lost it all, including my little brother." She goes on to say that her son was born with birth defects, and that doctors have told her not to have any more children within the next ten years because they, too, will be born with defects.
“在中毒以前我們是一個幸福的家庭”,一位名叫索非亞的年輕姑娘解釋,她與家人生活在轉基因大豆田附近,在那準備召集被重用。 “我們有我們的植物和果樹,但我們失去一切,包括我的小弟。”她接著說她的兒子出生時帶有缺陷,和醫生已告訴她未來 10年不要有任何更多的孩子,因為他們亦將帶有缺陷出生。
Sofia is not alone, either. There are numerous cases of disease and birth defects that have been reported all across South America as a result of GM soy cultivation. And the problem is only becoming exponentially worse.

According to the investigation, production of GM soy increased 35-fold between 1996 and 2003. And between that time, the use of Roundup increased an astounding 5600 percent, as farmers have to apply increasingly higher amounts of the herbicide every year in order for it to keep working. And in addition to Roundup, they are now having to apply the highly-toxic 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D)chemical, which is known to cause neurological damage and chronic inflammation.

Tests conducted on glyphosate have found that the chemical inhibits proper brain development, which seems to explain perfectly why young Magui Arguello from Buenos Aires, Argentina, was born with mental impairment. Like many others in similar areas who have experienced similar issues, Magui's parents say the use of dangerous toxins in GM agriculture is to blame.

The report brings to light the dirty reality of GM soy cultivation, and the way the crop is discreetly used throughout the food chain. Even in Europe where consumers largely reject GMOs used directly in food, GM soy is quietly used to feed conventional livestock. And since food products that come from GMO-fed animals do not technically have to be labeled as containing GMOs, most consumers have no idea that they are present.

They have acknowledged that meat, fish, eggs and dairy products on their shelves could contain “indirect” GM ingredients.
Every major supermarket in the country said it was unable to provide a guarantee that it was not selling products from animals given GM feed.
Even ''high-end’’ retailers said only the more expensive organic ranges were certain to have been produced without any GM involvement.
The disclosures have reignited the debate about the use of genetic technology in food production following health and environmental concerns.
Opponents of the technology claimed that retailers were using a loophole in labelling rules to “trick” the public over the link to GM.
The disclosures follow the recent resignation of two leading academics from a government panel set up to assess public attitudes to the new technology in protest at “GM propaganda”.
Under European rules, any food containing raw GM ingredients, such as corn or soy, must be labelled as such.
There is no legal obligation for food producers, shops and supermarkets to do the same when the GM link is further back in the food chain.
It means, for example, that milk from dairy cows reared on modified soy can be sold without any reference to GM on the label.

According to food watchdogs, such products can be exempted from food labelling rules because the original foodstuffs have been broken down into a different form in the animal’s stomach and no longer pose a health risk to consumers.

Campaigners said consumers deserved to be given the choice – and knowledge of the “indirect” GM link – through clearer labelling.

Michael Meacher, the former environment minister, said animal feed was being used as a way of “inserting GM into the food chain”.

“If people choose to eat GM that is a matter for them,” he said. “But I think we are trying to trick them by making sure it actually happens even though people realise what the implications are.”

Last night supermarkets including Iceland, Aldi and Lidl said they could provide no guarantee that meat, farmed fish, eggs or dairy products on sale did not come from animals given GM feed. Asda said “all livestock” could potentially have been fed GM products. Sainsbury’s and Tesco said poultry and animals for certain high value lines were fed a non-GM diet. But they could not guarantee animal products from most of the rest of the range.

M&S and Waitrose, which promote a tougher stance against factory-farmed foods, sell processed food such as chicken sandwiches and ice cream produced from animals fed a GM diet.

Retailers said British farmers relied largely on imported feed, most of which was made from GM soy meal from North or South America. Pete Riley, of the campaign group GM Freeze, said: “No supermarket can claim to be non-GM, they might have aspired to be at one point, but effectively they have been pulling the wool over people’s eyes.”

Genetically modified baby milk 'could create superbugs'

BABY milk formula containing untested genetically modified ingredients poses a potential risk of creating antibiotic resistant superbugs, a leading medical researcher says.

Professor Peter Collignon, from the Australian National University medical school, says many GM foods contained antibiotic resistance genes which needlessly placed people, animals and the environment at a risk.

"Why expose the environment, animals, people to antibiotics resistance genes that could potentially be taken up by bacteria and develop superbug properties when we don't have to?" he said at a demonstration in front of Parliament House.

This was part of a Greenpeace campaign that has included supermarket sit-ins and a number of arrests after analysis of the popular infant formula S-26 revealed traces of GM soy and corn.

S-26 manufacturer Wyeth Nutrition says its soy product may contain traces of GM material but it is well below the Australian food standards level.

Professor Collignon said the risk to any individual was likely to be low but more significant across millions.

"We should not have antibiotic resistance genes multiplied up by crops growing the genes and having more risk to us for even more problems with superbugs when that is a risk that doesn't have to be taken," he said.

The Greens, back by Independent Senator Nick Xenophon plan to introduce legislation requiring food labelling to reveal GM content, allowing consumers to choose whether or not to buy products containing GM ingredients.

Greens Senator Rachel Siewert said mothers were buying infant formula, expecting it to be safe.

"Unbeknown to mothers and fathers they are feeding their children infant formula that has been contaminated," she said.

"Parents are not being informed so they can't makes choices as to whether want to buy that product or not."

Senator Xenophon said consumers were being treated like mushrooms on GM food ingredients, kept in the dark and feed rubbish.

"This has been exposed as a result of Greenpeace, a non-government organisation doing the testing. You have to ask what on earth have our food regulators responsible for food safety standards been doing," he said.

"Food Standards Australia New Zealand needs a kick up the backside for their lack of action on this."

Senator Xenophon said there were too many scientists and scientific papers saying GM health effects were unknown.

"And if you adopt the precautionary principle, as you should particularly ... when you are talking about infant formula, then consumers have a right to know, parents have a right to make an informed choice as to whether they buy a product with any GM contained in it at all," he said.
